Featured DJs & Musical Guests

Our DJs have shared a list of their favorite songs or a description of their style, check 'em out and get ready to dance!

Cid Galicia, Chico, CA

Cid Galicia has been DJing for 2 years now; beginning with house parties and then, under the tutelage of Scott Kaufman and Ron Thompson, DJing lindy nights at Midtown Stomp. The genres Cid DJs are lindy and blues, spending time in the study of their music, artists, and history. Cid is always searching for new versions of classic songs. He has djed such events as the Utah Lindy Exchange, Reno Dance Sensation, Friday Night Blues, Blues Rising, Come Rain or Come Shine, Blues Shout, and Down Home Blues.

He is known for a contemporary/traditional blues mix. His contemporary music echoes the traditional origin and is interspersed with traditional voices.

You'll find traditional music mixed in with contemporary works such as:

  • Da Thrill Is Gone - Christ Thomas King
  • I'v Got You Under My Skin - Biz Markie/Lou Rawls
  • Lullaby of Birdland - R&B Version
  • I Need Some Money - John Lee Hooker

One of his strengths as a DJ is pairing songs that tell a story. His favorite pair is Dr. John's Marie Laveau and Chris Thomas King's "like a hurricane" ( subtitled:echoes of marie laveau). The first song has a more traditional feel and oratory historical quality. As if a father were telling his children a word of mouth piece of history. CTK's version is like that young boy recalling his fathers story and relating it to his contemporary experience. He makes sure his contemporary creativity as a DJ/dancer is rooted and listens to the past it echoes.

Chris Ransdell, Tulsa, OK

Chris tries to find music that inspires creativity and blues movement in many genres; primarily: Soul, Folk, Tango, R&B, Acoustic, & alternative. Chris was coerced into trying Swing Dance in 1998 and has been hooked ever since. He started teaching Lindy and Blues in 2001, and had his national DJ debut at the first "Cheap Thrills" in St. Louis. Since then he has taught and DJed at workshops regionally and across the country.

Luther & the Healers, Houston, TX - Live Band

Formed about 10 years ago, when Luther relocated from Chicago to Houston, Luther and the Healers are a local Houston blues band who play regularly at the Big Easy. Luther plays lead guitar and handles most of the vocals. Together with Magic, Mike, and Barry, they are the hardest working band in Texas. Luther's strong, howling guitar lead, a great keyboard solo, and the steady bass groove here all pointed to how tight and capably this band can play. The band is both talented and fearless, taking on Stevie Ray Vaughn, Otis Redding, Jonny Lang, B.B. King, and many other greats.

Karen Maria Capo, Portland, OR - Guest Vocalist

Karen Maria Capo, Lead Vocalist and Songwriter for Midnight Siren, began her career on Broadway at the age of 11 in the musical DUDE by the authors of HAIR. She performed in various plays and cabarets until she completed her studies at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York. Karen Maria is a staple in the swing and blues community as a dancer, DJ, singer, and all-around entertainer. She has performed at Cheap Thrills, Sacramento Lindy Exchange, Austin Lindy Exchange, Emerald City Blues, Red White and Blues, and countless others. You can catch her performing regularly in her hometwon of Portland with her new band Porkpie.

Patrick Warren

Patrick began dancing in 2002 after being dragged kicking and screaming to a Swing class. He was instantly hooked. Introduced to Blues dancing in 2004, Patrick began attending several Blues weekends. After taking Blues musicality through a Jerry & Kathy class at Cheap Thrills, he became hooked on Blues music. He began collecting a wide variety of music that he felt was ideal for Blues dancing, with an emphasis on smooth, sultry Blues. The next logical step was for Patrick to begin sharing his music with others.
